WHAT CUT IS THAT? - THE CUSHION CUT

We’ve taken a look at the Asscher cut - now lets look more closely at the cushion cut.

The cushion cut is one of the oldest diamond shapes and remains one of the most popular. This cut takes its roots from the similar 'Old Mine' cut dating back to the 1700s.

So what is it exactly?

It's a ‘soft’ rectangular, or square, with rounded edges. A cushion cut diamond complements the shape with softened corners, giving it a plumped up pillow-like look, hence the term “cushion cut.” It's classified as a fancy shape and typically has 57-58 facets.

The cut became so popular that most stones in the nineteenth century were cut in this shape. The cut was universally loved that much that many of the world's most famous diamonds are an early version of the cushion cut, including the Hope Diamond, weighing in at 45.52 carats, and the Regent Diamond (shown below) thats been associated with French royalty for centuries, weighing in at a whopping 140.5 carats!

Cushion cut diamonds are still quite ‘brilliant’, but are less brilliant than round diamonds. However, due to their larger facets, they also tend to have more fire. Many people love the high fire of a cushion cut diamond, while others prefer the high overall brilliance of round diamonds.

Cushion cut diamonds are often less expensive than round diamonds because they waste less rough crystal. Also, because they are often less in-demand than round or princess cut diamonds, they tend to cost less, too! This means that choosing a cushion cut diamond can offer you not only super sparkle, but great value, too.

Cushion cuts are not just for diamonds - this fancy cut works wonderfully well with gems like tanzanite, ruby and sapphire.
