The Jewellery Box: Why Do Some Diamonds Look Bigger Than Others?

The Jewellery Box: Why Do Some Diamonds Look Bigger Than Others?

Two diamonds can weigh exactly the same, yet one can look noticeably larger than the other. So what’s going on?

It all comes down to how a diamond is cut.

A diamond’s carat weight tells us how much it weighs, but it doesn’t tell us exactly how that weight is distributed. A well-cut diamond can have a larger-looking appearance from above because more of its weight is spread across its surface.

The shape makes a difference too. An oval, pear or marquise diamond can appear larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight because of its elongated outline.

And then there’s the setting. A halo of smaller diamonds around a centre stone can make the centre diamond appear larger, while certain settings expose more of the stone and allow it to make more of an impression on the finger.

Of course, bigger isn’t necessarily better. The beauty of a diamond comes from a combination of its cut, proportions, sparkle, colour and clarity — and, most importantly, what you like.

So when you’re choosing a diamond, don’t look only at the number on the scales. Look at the whole stone.

That’s where the magic happens.
