The Jewellery Box: What’s the Difference Between 9ct, 18ct and 22ct Gold?

Gold is gold… isn't it?

Well, not quite.

You may have seen jewellery described as 9ct, 18ct or 22ct gold. The number tells us how much pure gold is contained within the metal.

9ct gold contains 37.5% pure gold, with the remainder made up of other metals.

18ct gold contains 75% pure gold.

22ct gold contains 91.6% pure gold.

The higher the carat, the greater the proportion of pure gold.

But that doesn't automatically mean that higher carat gold is the right choice for every piece of jewellery. Other metals are added partly to give gold greater strength and alter its colour.

9ct gold is popular for everyday jewellery because it is durable and generally more affordable.

18ct gold has a higher gold content and is often chosen for fine jewellery and engagement rings.

22ct gold has a beautiful, rich colour but is softer, so it isn't always the practical choice for jewellery that receives a lot of everyday wear.

There isn't one “best” carat of gold.

It depends on the piece, how you'll wear it and what you love.
