Sapphire: September’s Birthstone
Share
September’s birthstone, sapphire, is prized for its durability and wide colour range.

While best known for deep blue tones, sapphires occur in nearly every colour except red. They rank 9 on the Mohs scale, making them ideal for everyday jewellery.
Sources include Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Myanmar.

Sapphires have been used in jewellery for centuries and are particularly valued for engagement rings and heirloom pieces due to their resilience and elegance. In medieval times, sapphires were believed to protect against dishonesty and envy, and were worn by clergy and royalty alike as a symbol of moral clarity and divine favour. Sapphires have traditionally symbolised wisdom, loyalty, and integrity.

Today, sapphires continue to represent faithfulness and inner strength, often chosen for engagement rings and heirloom pieces intended to endure through generations. Their popularity with the Royal Family means they are never out of favour as a gemstone of choice.

We adore sapphires here at Almagrove Jewellers, we select pieces with intense colour and character, mixed in with our preowned and vintage sapphire collection. Do please look through our online collection or call into our store to be shown them personally.
