Record Breaking June for Gemstones

Record Breaking June for Gemstones

It's certainly been an exciting June for gemstones.

Making the headlines this June, a 55 carat ruby sold for over $34million at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York. The largest and most valuable ruby ever to appear at auction, Sotheby’s Jewellery in New York told the Press agency they were completely entranced seeing it for the first time.

The rough red stone was discovered in Montepuez, Mozambique in July 2022, it weighed 101 carats uncut, a record for the largest gem-quality ruby ever discovered. It was nicknamed the Estrela de FURA - Star of FURA in Portuguese, after the mining company that discovered it, (Portuguese being one of the languages spoken in Mozambique)

Rubies of this importance and magnitude are exceedingly rare, making the gem even before polishing a landmark jewel.

What is really nice to learn is that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the stone have been allocated by Fura Gems for an academy that will provide education and technical training in mining, engineering, carpentry and agriculture.

At the same Magnificent Jewels auction in New York the Eternal Pink diamond was also sold.

The 10.57 carat fancy vivid purple/pink diamond set a new price-per-carat record for the colour grade. De Beers, in partnership with the government of Botswana, unearthed the rough that became The Eternal Pink at the country’s Damtshaa mine. It was cut and polished into a cushion cut to maximise the 'bubblegum colour' to its full potential.

Smashing yet another world record this pink diamond selling for $34.8 million meant Sothebys sold two gems for over $30 million each at the same auction.

Total sales at the Auction added up to $95.9 million.
