Pearl: June’s Birthstone

June’s birthstone is one of the few organic gems used in jewellery. Pearls are formed within molluscs and have been valued for their soft lustre and understated beauty for centuries.
Unlike mineral gemstones, pearls are composed primarily of calcium carbonate. They rank only 2.5–4.5 on the Mohs scale, making them softer and more delicate than most gemstones.

Pearls may be natural or cultured and vary in size, shape, colour, and lustre. Pearl jewellery requires careful handling, avoiding exposure to chemicals and storing separately to prevent surface damage.

Historically, pearls were believed to bring calm and emotional balance, often worn to encourage clarity and composure. In many cultures, they were also linked to femininity and grace, making them a traditional choice for milestone moments such as weddings and anniversaries. Today, pearls remain a symbol of timeless elegance and understated beauty, valued for their natural refinement rather than brilliance.

From single-strand necklaces to elegant earrings, pearls remain a symbol of quiet sophistication. Their gentle glow suits classic jewellery and they are a statement enough on their own.

At Almagrove Jewellers we can help you source your own pearls, vintage or new. You may also like to peruse our instore collection.
