July is for Rubies

July is for Rubies

Birthstones have been around since as early as the first century, supposedly Romano-Jewish historian, Josephus, discovered a connection between the 12 stones of the high priest's breastplate, the zodiac signs, and the months of the year.

In 16th century Poland they began wearing a different coloured gem for each month. Fast forward to 1912 and the American Association of Jewellers met to confirm and agree on the 'set' stones for each month.

Whether you believe in the spiritual side of gemstones, their cleansing and healing powers or not, it's still a delightful reason to pick a certain stone for a certain month, birthday, or anniversary.

The birthstone associated with July is the ruby. The sun moves from emotional Cancer to spirited Leo, making this month full of enthusiasm, zest for life and sentimentality.

Rubies were regarded by ancient Hindus as the “king of gems.” It was believed to protect its wearer from evil. It certainly add drama and passion to your outfit. We love them.  They are pinkish red to blood-red colour, a variety of the mineral corundum.
The word ruby comes from ruber - latin for red.
