All about the Emeralds

The ultimate classy gemstone, seeing a huge comeback and hitting the heights of fashion, there is nothing quite like an emerald.

Seen as the stone of Eternal Youth in Ancient Egypt, Mummies were often buried with them. Its in Egypt they were first mined around 1500BC.

People have also believed emeralds could confer riches, power, and eloquence, by sharpening your wits and strengthening your memory, if worn as talismans.  Currently known as the birth stone of May.

One of the four gemstones seen as 'Precious', the others being Ruby, Sapphire, and Diamond. But unlike the other precious stones which can be found in a variety of colours, Emeralds are always green. They get their green colour from trace amounts of chromium and/or vanadium.

And whilst in Diamonds clarity plays a significant role in value, inclusions are expected in Emeralds. They are found in over 99.9% of all emeralds - so be warned that an inclusion free emerald is very likely to be a fake.

The inclusions are made of gasses, other minerals and crystals taken on by the emerald as it forms. It is known as the Jardin of the emeralds, French for garden, and quite desirable. No two emeralds are every the same, the pattern being so individual, and the prettier patterns increases the value of the stone.

The green you see also depends on the cut - a skilled gemologist can cut the stone to give a darker stone more light or a lighter stone more dark depth. It is not surprising that the emerald has a specific cut named after it, 'The Emerald Cut'. Many emeralds are prepared in the style, as are diamonds and other gemstones.

Colombian emeralds command premium prices, with finds also in Ethiopia. More are frequently found Brazil, and Zambia, though there has been finds across the world.
